Dr Alan Robertson is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Strand, who has spent nearly 40 years counselling, teaching and preaching. In addition to his private practice, he also sees patients at Helderberg Clinic. He is available for face-to-face, as well as online consultations.
He was in the full time Christian ministry for 20 years during which time he gained experience in family and marital/couples counselling. He went on to gain a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology and became a registered psychologist in full-time practice in 2002, giving him over 20 years of additional experience as a Clinical Psychologist.
In 2006 he completed his Doctoral Studies in the field of depression and spirituality. In 2005 he published an article in the South African Journal of Psychology dealing with narrative therapy and depression: "Narratives of depression".
Dr Alan gives therapy in many fields, from therapy for children to therapy for people struggling with alcohol abuse. However, his particular fields of interest are therapy for people suffering from depression, as well as marital/couples therapy. He sees patients of all ages and from all walks of life.
He has been greatly influenced by client-centred therapy,
cognitive-behavioural therapy, the logotherapy of Viktor Frankl and narrative therapy, which he combines into his own unique integrative approach. Dr Alan is an associate of the Viktor Frankl Institute for Logotherapy, based in Dallas, Texas. Logotherapy teaches that psychological healing can be found through the discovery of meaning, purpose and spirituality.
He is also a self-supporting Anglican priest who is sometimes invited to preach at St. Andrews Anglican Church in Strand, which is where he hosts his doctor’s rooms.
